On March 23, 2019, gaming accessories company PDP Gaming announced the submission of a trademark infringement complaint against new mega company Poly (formerly Plantronics and Polycom) concerning their new logo.
The Telecommunications industry has been anxiously awaiting the announcement of a new brand ever since audio technology and leading communication brands Plantronics and Polycom merged. The two companies finally released their new name “Poly,” in tandem with an impressive new logo and stunning website.
After stating their surprise and disappointment at the new Poly logo appearing to be a complete copy of PDP Gaming’s logo, the brand filed a formal complaint for trademark infringement with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California on March 22, 2019. PDP stated in a blog post that they have been using their logo since October 2018. And that their logo has been in development since March of 2018.
PDP & Poly Logo Comparison
Poly responded with a brief blog post of their own on March 29, 2019, stating that they developed their logo independently and have disputed any claims raised.
Furthermore, on March 18th, 5 days prior to PDP’s announcement of their complaint, Poly published a blog post describing the events and conversations that took place during the development of their new brand.
Will Poly quietly buy-out PDP Gaming so they can keep their new logo? Can PDP financially compete against mega company Poly in a legal battle? Is this all just a clever PR move to get the new Poly brand credible link-backs? We are all keeping our ears to the pavement to see what the results of this trademark infringement complaint will be. One can only speculate on what will happen next. To be continued…
